"Seven Houses in France" among the finalists for best translation of the year

The English translation of Bernardo Atxaga’s novel Seven Houses in France (original title Zazpi etxe Frantzian) is one of the finalists for the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize, an award that honors the year’s best translations into English. Margaret Jull Costa’s outstanding translation has been chosen as one of six finalists.

Presentation of Bernardo Atxaga’s latest work in “1937 Lives and Bombs”

Last week Bernardo Atxaga’s latest work, appearing in “1937 Lives and Bombs”, was published by BBK Foundation. The book presents four short stories, each by a different author, that put the reader in various Basque towns and show the devastation of the bombings that occurred in the spring of 1937. The book was presented in Guernica on April 25th, and in Eibar on April 27th. Atxaga was present at the presentation in Eibar, the town in which his story is set.

Bernardo Atxaga, finalist for the "Shadow" Independent Foreign Fiction Prize

Bernardo Atxaga has just been honored by the "Shadow" Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. His latest novel to be translated into English, Seven Houses in France, has made the shortlist put out a shadow jury made up of a group of bloggers that specialize in foreign fiction. This shadow jury accompanies the official jury.

Elizabete Manterola Agirrezabalaga has just presented her doctoral dissertation, entitled "Euskal literatura beste hizkuntza batzuetara itzulia. Bernardo Atxagaren lanen itzulpen moten arteko alderaketa". Her research is on Basque literature in translation, focusing on a comparison of the different types of translations of Bernardo Atxaga’s work.

France Culture broadcasts a documentary on Atxaga’s Bilbao

Bernardo Atxaga will be the subject of a France Culture broadcast this week. In the radio report Renaître à Bilbao, l'itinéraire de Bernardo ("Rediscovering Bilbao: Bernardo's Route") the Basque writer takes us on an auditory tour, showing us his Bilbao through texts, stories, songs and poems. The radio documentary was produced by Christine Diger and is being broadcast this Tuesday and Thursday at 23:00 on France Culture.

The novel "Seven Houses in France" among the nominees for best Foreign Fiction book of 2011

Booktrust has just released its list of the 15 works of fiction nominated for "Foreign Fiction Prize". This prize is one of the most widely recognized prizes for non-English fiction, and for the first time a novel originally written in Basque —Bernardo Atxaga's "Seven Houses in France"— has made the list.

Bernardo Atxaga in "Cuadernos de Narrativa"

The latest volume of "Cuadernos de Narrativa" gathers the texts of the various papers presented at the 2009 International Colloquium on Bernardo Atxaga, which took place March 23-25 at the University of Neuchâtel as part of the "Grand Séminaire de Neuchâtel". Warm reception for the novel "Seven Houses in France"

"Seven Houses in France", the English version of "Zazpi etxe Frantzian", was released at the beginning of November and has been receiving positive reviews in the UK press. This is the sixth novel by Bernardo Atxaga published in English.
